Silica knowledge: Why is it called silica (sio2)?

Silca is a general term for white powdered X-ray amorphous silicic acid and silicate products, mainly referring to precipitated silica, fumed silica and ultra-fine silica gel, but also including powdered synthetic aluminum silicate and silicate.

    Silica

Silica is a porous substance, its composition can be expressed by SiO2·nH2O, where nH2O exists in the form of surface hydroxyl group. Soluble in caustic soda and hydrofluoric acid, insoluble in water, solvents and acids (except hydrofluoric acid). High temperature resistance, non-flammable, tasteless, odorless, with good electrical insulation.
When it comes to silica, many people will naturally think whether there is black carbon black? In fact, carbon black exists.
Carbon black, also known as carbon black, is an amorphous form of carbon. Light, loose and very fine black powder, with a very large surface area, ranging from 10 to 3000m2/g, is the product of incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of carbon-containing substances (coal, natural gas, heavy oil, fuel oil, etc.) under the condition of insufficient air. Specific gravity 1.8-2.1. Those made from natural gas are called "gas black", those made from oil are called "lamp black", and those made from acetylene are called "acetylene black". Carbon black can be used as a black dye, used in the manufacture of ink, paint, etc., and is also used as a reinforcing agent for rubber.

    Carbon black

So what's the difference between carbon black and carbon black? Here comes a story.
In the 1840s, with the mass production and application of automobile tires, a large amount of industrial carbon black needs to be consumed. At that time, industrial carbon black was made of petroleum as raw materials, and a large amount of oil was consumed during the preparation process. In order to avoid the risk of oil embargo, Germany in World War II urgently needed a reinforcing additive that could replace carbon black for rubber tires. 1941 Developed a carbon black replacement filler for the tire industry. After research and development, a high-temperature hydrogen-oxygen flame hydrolysis method was created to successfully produce ultra-fine particles of silica. These particles appear white and are used as the main substitute for carbon black, which is subsequently called fumed white carbon black.
Therefore, silica and carbon black are two completely different products. The reason why silica is also called silicon dioxide is that the main component of silica is silicon dioxide.
